LOL. “Avoid traffic by traveling at 4:00am.”

Kinja'd!!!

The article even includes this helpful tidbit:

After the fireworks are done, the best time to head home is 11pm, which allows you to miss the post-show rush.

Right, so when leaving a popular event, wait around at the venue until most of the crowd has gone to avoid... waiting in your car instead?

Ah yes, driving * into* NYC to celebrate the Fourth. Y’know, because there’s no light pollution of any kind to affect a fireworks show and there definitely isn’t anything blocking the skyline most places one could be. Oh, and definitely no milling insane crowds of human funk made flesh.

T he best 4th of July in recent memory was when my wife and I hiked a small nearby mountain with a great view of multiple lakes and nearby towns. TONS of people with waterfront property shoot their own fireworks, and we saw the displays from 4-5 towns all at the same time, too.

When I lived in california we would go to Santa Cruz for holidays and it would almost always be counter flow traffic as everyone wa s headed to the mountains and we were headed to the beach. Another suggestion is to stay home.

With the mid-week holiday, we’re not leaving home. Coincidentally, we’ll be in NYC the following weekend; but going IN on a Friday and OUT on a Sunday... not so bad.

I’m thinking that a mid-week Fourth will be worse because people aren’t combining it with a long weekend as frequently. Everyone will rush to the show and then try to get home quickly on a worknight...

Agreed. We’ll be home on the 4th itself (we’ll go across town to the lake). My wife and I hiked a small mountain nearby and saw TONS of nearby fireworks a few years back. I might push to do that again.

The fourth party we go to is a big barbecue shindig on a farm, with a set of the farm’s neighbors who budget “enthusiastically”, no city lights for miles and miles around, a perimeter of mountains that focuses the echoes, and about a quarter mile from the fire department setting off their Fourth show... which they probably save for all year. We’re talking probably 40 minutes straight, a dozen trailer’s worth of industrial grade blammo, thousands and thousands of dollars.

Lifehacker has to be the worst site in the GMG universe. I know some people don’t like Jez or the Root, but they do provide interesting/insightful content to their target markets.

But Lifehacker? Usually it’s common sense or shit like the above. Wanna stay thin? Eat well and Exercise. What a hack!

Once in a while, I’ll read something that analyzes competing web services, like VPNs, or something comparing video streaming services, just in case there’s a new player or one I haven’t thought of, or a new feature... but those are few and far between.

You’re spot-on that most of the articles are useless. [insert personal finance question for headline] : [content] Spend less than you make! [/content]

That is awesome. We used to just putt around in my boat and watch for people doing private shows; a couple people go nuts and spend $10k. Or at least they used to. But the size is limited to what you can buy in NH, and after a while it does honestly get a little numbing. I’d like to see some bigger stuff mixed in, like what you’re talking about.

Also, wait. The FIRE DEPT does its own show?!

You could also consider obeying traffic laws.

Me? Or just... a general public announcement regarding one of the causes of traffic jams

Yes. The local fire department puts on a whole-town-size fireworks show. I think the town doesn’t actually do the display - it’s one of those cases where instead of the fire department overseeing the town’s fireworks display, the town may be contributing to the fire department’s fireworks budget.

I have to think one year the fire department asked “so, are we going to start doing town fireworks displays?” and the town said “well, if you want to do one, maybe?” and the fire department went “WE GOT THIS MOTHERFUCKERS” and completely lost their minds.

They literally set them off from the fire department parking lot.

I thought it said, “how to avoid traffic STOPS”

I have no idea why...

I will be driving at 0 4:00 on the 4th because I’m catching a flight at the ass-crack of dawn. That’s when the uncertainty of holiday traffic will become a thing, as I have a 325+ mile drive to where I’m going from the airport...

Hey, if there’s decent food nearby and you have a friend , you can chill out at a restaurant, or ask a couple locals if they know of any less-known places that you might be able to burn some time at.

Smart people would park the car in some long-term parking area, and use mass transit to commute in.

Absolutely! The last few times we’ve expected to be in post-even traffic, we just packed the car with snacks and water. If there are restaurants nearby that aren’t slammed, and you have the time... that’s perfect.

Most times I’ve been to events, we either parked farther from the entrance and got seats close to the exit so we could leave before the rush , or straight up just waited out the wave by virtue of parking a few blocks away and being able to skate up side streets.

It’s great when you can do that! The last two live shows I went to, there was really no way to choose where you got to park. So one show which was pretty small and thus less organized, we were early and got parked waaaaayy in and it took 30 minutes for us to get out. Mind you, it was a nice cool night so we just had the windows down, played music and ate snacks while we waited.

The most recent show is at a local venue that’s gotten REALLY well organized over the years. We got there pretty early and they set it up so the early cars park in a place that lets you out FIRST! Then they pile everyone else in behind you, rather than parking back to front, you know what I mean? It was brilliant. We live about 35 minutes from the venue and we were home inside of 45 minutes from the end of the last song, including the 5 minute walk out to the car.
